The Costanera Center in Chile’s capital city Santiago is the largest shopping mall in Latin and Central America. With 110,000 visitors per day to the mall’s shops, food outlets and car parks, ensuring excellent voice and mobile broadband services for its subscribers is a priority for Telefónica Chile.

Yet meeting the needs of such large numbers of customers (the Food Court alone supports around 2,500 active users) is di cult because the thick reinforced concrete structure can hinder radio signals from the macrocell network.

Recognizing the potential to win substantially more revenue from these thousands of shoppers, Telefónica Chile decided to upgrade its existing mall network, comprising 3G distributed antenna system (DAS) and macrocell base stations to enhance the experience of its 3G and 4G subscribers. However, the DAS would have been difficult to upgrade to LTE and would have needed major work to add the required capacity.
