The digital workplace is a workforce strategy that harnesses technology, creative talent and consumerization trends, to improve workforce effectiveness and business agility. It is a systematic attempt to create a working environment where employees are in tune with the organization's overall goals and objectives; where they are enabled and empowered to perform as best as they can; and where they are able to grow and adapt professionally as the business environment and the needs of the organization change. A digital workplace enables new, more effective ways of working, raises employee engagement and agility, and exploits consumer-oriented styles and technologies.
The idea of a digital workplace appeals to many organizations and often for different reasons. Digital workplace initiatives vary widely in scope and cost. In the early stages of a digital workplace execution strategy, these solution capabilities may be treated as separate projects (see 'Creating a Digital Workplace Execution Strategy,' in preparation) and each one of the projects may carry its own business justification. For example, a business case for a bring-your-own-device program could be made purely on the basis of reduced mobile device acquisition costs. However, in the later stages of a digital workplace execution strategy, the ambitions and expectations grow, along with the practical rollout of additional solution capabilities.
