One Size Doesn’t Fit All
This paper will take a look at the challenges of four different backup and recovery workloads, along with the tools that are available to address these challenges. This paper also reviews the advantages and disadvantages of using an enterprise-level backup and recovery product versus using products from separate companies to address your backup and recovery needs.
Backup and recovery can be quite difficult for a number of reasons. It is a constant battle of physics between the incredible explosion of data on one hand, and shrinking bandwidth due to the virtualization of everything on the other hand. It’s also a constant battle between the desire for simplicity in the backup and recovery system and the need to meet the backup and recovery needs of new applications, as well as wanting to take advantage of advanced backup and recovery functionality available from today’s storage array vendors.
The result is that one size does not fit all. Each backup and recovery challenge must be met with one or more specialized ways to perform backup and recovery.
